Anyone growing up in the 50s and 60s, living in the South and who did any car traveling will likely remember being on the lookout for those rare, but highly sought after, Stuckey’s signs. A chance to get out of the car, get some candy or something else to eat, a hot dog, maybe even some breakfast, use the restroom, and most important of all to a kiddo under 10…. TOYS!!! Once in awhile, though, if you were traveling through Georgia or South Carolina, you would be fooled by a pretender to the kid-mecca, Rawl’s. I would always be so mad every time I saw one of those signs. The main reason was they used the same color scheme and a similar font to the Stuckey’s signs. My hopes gotten up sky high only to be dashed. Rawl’s did NOT have TOYS, or not that I know of. They most likely had heavenly candy… Who knows. Anyhow, for the first time since we have been living here, I notice on US 17 about 8 miles south of our house and about 2 miles north of Woodbine, GA, this hiding in the woods.
How could I have traveled this road numerous times and NOT noticed it? Beats me. Some research indicated that the Rawl’s factory was located in Woodbine. Now, how about that? The building also still stands, but no vestiges remain of its former occupation.
Funny thing is, the same week I took this picture, I also passed by Stuckey’s original headquarters in Eastman, GA, now occupied by the Standard Candy Company. See, that competition is still in place, I guess.
Switching gears, here are my yarn singles from the Fiber Candy.
Here is a skein of it, 3 plied. Truly now yarn candy. I spun it semi woolen and fulled it and whacked it around to stabilize the neps in the yarn and to open up its woolen character.
The turquoise/green is more of the same fiber in an alternate colorway.
What a month!! I made a major decision last month that went horribly wrong. A decision which required me to take immediate action without a lot of forethought or consideration. For a person who likes to play things safe, this was very scary… Fortunately, things have righted themselves, and I can draw a huge sigh of relief! Not a bad way to celebrate “Leap Day”.
Today is a rainy, overcast day. A perfect day for surfing the internet. An especially perfect day for discovering this delightful site: Memphis Memories. If you browse the site under 1950’s and 1960’s, you will get an idea of the childhood this baby boomer had in the big city. I saw and read about things on this site I had completely forgotten. Like the ice cream you could buy from the ice cream truck (Merry Mobile) called “Buried Treasure”. There was a little plastic toy hidden in the ice cream!! I think, though, most of the time I opted for the Orange Push Up. The toy was really a little piece of junk and the ice cream flavor wasn’t my favorite. Then, there was the horror show called Fantastic Features. I would not have recognized the name of the show, but the host, “SIVAD” (Davis, spelled backwards, in case you wonder where they came up with a name like that) was someone to talk about. There is actually a video of him on You Tube. Boy, was he corny, but he sure scared me when I was a kid!! Note the really, really, really southern accent.
Then, another interesting bit was another You Tube video of Marguerite Piazza, doing, of all things, a cigarette commercial. She was a famous opera singer (actually, I never realized how famous until I found this site – an autobiography of her was published last year – I must get around to reading it.) When my parents were newly married, they rented an apartment from a lady in a house next door to MP. After seeing the video, I think I can understand why my mom never wanted to talk much about her. She was one good looking gal!!
Sorry I haven’t been around in awhile. Last week, life got in my face in a big way. I am okay now, but don’t have much time to post. Hope to be back tonight or tomorrow.
