1. Roasting a turkey in a convection oven makes a royal mess. You see, that fan in the oven just throws that grease from the turkey skin everywhere. From now on, I stick to oven roasting bags.
2. Knitting lace with laceweight alpaca on wooden knitting needles is a BAD idea.
3. When we gave out our new address to people likely to send us something, they all thought it was just a suggestion.
4. Fedex will leave a package at a totally uninhabited duplex that has a FOR RENT sign on it. (See #3).
5. People will help themselves to unattended item in #4.
6. iPod Touches are totally addictive.
7. How to blog from the iPod Touch.
(At least I think so. We’ll find out in a moment.)
-OR- Maybe someday I will look back on this and laugh.
Yesterday and today have been fraught (don’t you just love that word?) with accidents.
It all started yesterday morning. I went to get gas on the way to work. This particular gas station has a “cash accepter” built into the pump. I put my money in, selected the cheapest grade of gas and started to pump. For some weird reason, the pump switched over to pump the premium gas. Good thing the gas prices are down, or I would be seriously mad.
Fast forward until after work. I checked in my motel, and the clerk totally messed up my bill. I was going to pay cash for that as well. She assured me it would not go on my debit card. Guess what?? Oh yes, it did. I knew I was in trouble when I saw which clerk was working. I was going to pay her that night, but NO, she insisted I do it in the morning. I’m guessing she didn’t know how to handle as cash sale. (And, I DID complain about her this morning, in case you are wondering.)
Back to the timeline, I went to my room after dinner to print my reports and my expense report. My computer/printer kept insisting my document failed to print. Hah. What a laugh. I could not get it to STOP printing the same page OVER, and OVER, and OVER. Arghh.
Now, surely this day of doom was over. But, it was just a prelude to today. I got ready to leave work and had thrown my keys on the bed of my Durango. Well, I forgot they were there, slammed down the hatch, and guess which was the ONLY key that got mangled? My car key, of course. Now this key is one of those newfangled kind that have a security
chip and cannot be easily duplicated. Not only can you NOT get one of these at your neighborhood five and dime, it would also cost considerably more than 5 or 10. So, I had to call Bill, and he had to drive an hour and a half from where he was working to bring me his key.
And, last, but not least, when we stopped somewhere to eat, I went into the restroom to wash my hands. I was just reaching around the door handle to come out when an employee shoved the door open. Fortunately, I was able to jerk my hand away, but I narrowly escaped getting a jammed thumb. SHEEEEEEEESHHHH.. Do you think I can manage to take a bath tonight without drowning?
I hope your day was a whole lot better than mine!!
Life would not be nearly so interesting without stuff like this.
My husband and I are both assessed with a tax from a state where we no longer reside. The purpose of this post is not to debate the fairness of this issue but to relate what happened to us this year.
Recently, I got a notice that mine was “past due”. Of course, they added a hefty amount of interest to the amount for it being past due. Uh, I don’t think so!! So, we visited the bank and got a photocopy of the check where we had paid it (on time, I must add). Upon calling to inform the assessors of this, we learned that my name was in the system twice. Once was last name first, first name last and the other was just the opposite, first name first, last name last. You guessed it! They thought “both” of us owed the tax. Okay, c’mon, even a fifth grader could figure that one out.
Tired…. Tired of driving the extra mileage every day to check on the construction (won’t go there!!!) and the llamas. Tired of the expensive gas it takes to do this. Tired of the pace of the building going like molasses.
Okay, it is time for a little whining. Over the next week or so, I will be posting reasons that I am so ready to have our house finished and to move. I am calling the list random, because they are not going to be listed in order of priority.
Random reason #1 is a doozy. Every day, when we exit our duplex, we get to see this wall of shame which faces our driveway. We surely could use some foliage cover to block out this view:
So. Who in the world keeps their old Christmas tree until almost Memorial Day? I am wondering if they will discard it before we move. I am betting not. Also, note the trash on the card table next to the portable grill. After they moved in, they did not throw away their boxes, either. Trash blew over into our “yard” for who knows how long.
Well, it was bound to happen at some point. Bill decided we should start feeding the llamas in the small corral on the far side of the pasture so they would get used to being in that area. The only problem is that this is a relatively long trek (to hungry llamas, at least) from the barn to the corral. Yesterday, Sweet (Sweat) Pea decided to show her displeasure at having to wait. Yes, you guessed it. I became and moving target and she hit me square on the top of the head with… ugh… llama spit!! Whew, does it ever stink, especially when you are the one who is wearing the stuff.
Sugar spent most of the day lying down in the lean-to shelter. She has to be getting uncomfortable at this point, but still no hint of a baby yet.
Today, I warped my Knitter’s Loom for a scarf. This is the first time I have played with it in… a year, at least. I found it is much easier to warp in my studio. What a delightful and pleasant surprise!!! I am using some of my handspun, and the scarf is shaping up rather well.
Stupid story but true. Woke up this morning and got ready to hit the road to home. Didn’t give a thought to the time at all. Got home to find our “atomic clock” driven clock said it was 1 hour earlier. I thought, “Cool, we forgot about getting off DST”. So, we set all our clocks back, then about broke our cell phones opening and closing them and trying to figure out why the time didn’t change on “them”. We continued in our delusional state for about 2 hours when I finally looked it up on the internet and found out we don’t do the time warp thing until NEXT week. Oh well, we had an extra hour for a couple of hours, but had to give it back.
Maybe this runs in the family, come to think of it. Last week, a couple of gals that work with DS asked him to come on in and get some cake and treats for bosses’ day. He said he didn’t feel right about it since he wasn’t a boss. They said… WHAT?!? You’re OUR boss. You have to love him… He honestly did not know he had anyone working under him.
In less than a week we will be moving. The house has been turned upside down. I am frantically trying to make sure all my Master Spinner Materials are together and within easy reach. Most of my dishes (whew!) have been packed. That is the part I hate the “mostest”. I have enough fiber and fiber equipment, so it seems, to fill a whole room, at least. When I get AC in my studio, lots of it will go there. We hope to get electricity this week some time out there.
Bill is firming up details on our log house. It looks like it will not actually start being erected until September. Meanwhile, we can get foundation, septic and water installed. And, hopefully catch our breath for a moment or two.
I have dyed up ALL the fiber I wanted to be dyed. Some, I wanted to keep natural until I was sure what I was going to do with it. I used up mixed dye stock frantically. The rest I dumped. There wasn’t THAT much left, and it was getting old anyway. The last two hanks of wool I dyed turned out beautiful. Maybe in the afterlife (after moving, that is), I can get some shots of it. They are deep and rich and not at all loud. Not quite the style I have been doing lately, but I love how they turned out. One skein is on the order of this handspun, handknit vest of mine. Maybe socks to match are in order.

Just like everyone else, I am impatiently waiting for an invite to Ravelry. What a cool idea! After our move, we will be 3 days without phone service, which also means 3 days without internet. I am having withdrawal pains just thinking about it! Maybe I can take my work laptop and pop into a wireless hotspot.
Cheers, and I hope your week will be calmer than mine, my friends.
This is not a post, but if it were, it would be full of a bunch of gripes. So, this is NOT a post.
Or… What if you gave a party and nobody came? For the second time, I have showed up to teach a class at our LYS and no one showed up. This particular class was the one featured in the local newspaper last week. I took special care with my preparations, which were extensive.
Well, starting in September, it is pre-registration only. I can’t keep spinning my wheels this way. Maybe my community isn’t ready for this?!?!?
